Maintaining Your Field Shelter
You’ve invested in a Mobile Field Shelter and want to ensure it lasts for years to come. Proper care and maintenance are essential to keeping your shelter in good condition and protecting your four-legged friends from the weather.
Here are some key things to check and keep on top of:
Guttering
Regularly checking your guttering is essential, especially in autumn, winter, and spring. Autumn can be particularly problematic due to falling leaves, so it’s important to keep gutters clear during this time. Ensuring water flows through freely prevents damp build-up and allows proper roof drainage.
Roof
Inspect your roofing for any damage caused by wind or debris. If sheets become cracked or damaged in stormy weather, repair or replace them as soon as possible. This helps prevent internal dampness and ensures effective water run-off.
Clearing the Area
One often-overlooked step is removing tree branches near your shelter that could fall and cause damage during storms. Keeping the area around the shelter clear helps reduce the risk of accidents.
Treatment
The most important step in maintaining your Mobile Field Shelter is timber treatment. While all our timber is pressure-treated and has a potential lifespan of 15–25 years, we still recommend treating it once a year. The best time to do this is in late summer when the timber is driest.
Although no specific product is required, we suggest using a clear water sealer to maintain the shelter’s original appearance.
Animal Damage
Horses and ponies can sometimes cause wear and tear. If you notice any internal or external damage from your four-legged friends, make sure repairs or replacements are carried out promptly. If your horse or pony has a habit of chewing the wood, installing chew strips may help protect the shelter.
